German-Dutch border: Media reports describe exploitative living and working conditions experienced by migrant workers in the meat processing industry

According to media reports, a new system of exploitation of temporary workers has been established at the border, circumventing the ban on temporary work in the meat industry introduced in Germany in 2021. Temporary work agencies have bought houses in Germany to house migrant workers from Eastern Europe working in the meat industry in the Netherlands. In some cases, the conditions in the accommodation in Germany are so desolate, that they pose a danger "to the life and limb" of the inhabitants. The working conditions in the Netherlands are described as exploitative. Blatant violations of labour protection laws were found. In addition, rent and transport are deducted directly from wages and a loss of employment is often accompanied by an immediate loss of accommodation and thus homelessness.
