In March 2023, TikTok and Meta content moderators formed the first industry-wide collective in Europe demanding better workers rights. The moderators call for equal pay, health protection for their psyche and the right to organise and form work councils. In a first step, the group is seeking a formal agreement with social media platforms over the rights of content moderators. However, if their demands weren't met they would take legal action against social media companies. TikTok and Meta did not respond to a request for comment by the Financial Times.

In June 2023, more than 300 moderators signed a petition calling on lawmakers to improve their working conditions. After delivering the petition to the German Bundestag and testifying before the Bundestag's Digital Council, Cengiz Haksöz, who has worked as a content moderator at outsourcer TELUS International, was put on leave. The trade union ver.di heavily criticised the action and accusted TELUS of union busting and disregarding democracy. TELUS stated that Haksöz was suspended because he did not honour their employment agreements and that "allegations made by our team member at the Bundestag and in the media do not accurately reflect the reality of our business and the health and wellness resources we offer our team members". According to ver.di, Cengiz Haksöz was later able to return to work as the result of labour court proceedings.
