Indigenous Peoples Pushed to Margins

As the UN observes the International Day of the World's Indigenous People...a reclusive community of indigenous people in Philippines prepares for another restless night of fear and uncertainty...Mangyan tribe leaders now routinely contemplate their future in feverish debates...They are petrified that large mining companies will take over their ancestral land...[and] government will grant commercial operating license to mining corporations and they will forever lose their land and heritage...According to local government regulations, all indigenous peoples...must prove that they are the rightful owners of their ancestral land. Without the certificate of title, the Mangyan's ability to retain and manage their land and resources face the risk of being severely compromised...[I]ndigenous peoples...are being continually pushed to the margins. A lot more needs to be done to protect and promote the rights of indigenous peoples as their communities face unprecedented threat from globalisation and commercial exploitation of their land and resources.
