"CONFLICT OVER ARTISANAL MINING IN AREQUIPA LEAVES 14 DEAD", 11 June 2022

...A conflict in an artisanal mining area of Caravelí, in Arequipa region, has left 14 dead and ten missing. Local reporting indicates that between the first and second of June, two groups of artisanal miners were involved, Atico Calpa and Calpa Renace, both of which work in areas surrounding a small-scale mine, Intigold Mining SA, with some accusing the mine itself of involvement.

Local communities have requested a local state of emergency be declared while investigations proceed. As a result, Interior Minister Dimitri Senmache met with local communities, Atico Calpa and Intigold Mining SA, to hear accounts of what happened. Subsequently, he agreed to put the request for a state of emergency to the Council of Ministers. He has arranged for 40 extra police to be sent from Lima and another 30 from Arequipa to support the local force. The minister said the aim was to “restore order and promote dialogue”...
