Peru: Cerro Verde union denounces working conditions
The union representing workers at the Cerro Verde mining operation announced a 72-hour strike, marking an escalation in labor tensions at the site. The protest was called in response to what workers describe as a systematic failure by the company to guarantee basic health and safety conditions, placing their physical and mental wellbeing at constant risk.
According to the union, one of the most serious concerns is the lack of updated personal protective equipment, with safety gear and clothing allegedly not meeting current industry standards, increasing the likelihood of workplace accidents. Workers also criticized the absence of adequate rest areas, noting that there are no suitable spaces to recover from the long and demanding shifts typical of mining work.
Freeport McRoRan responded to the Business and Human Rights Center invitation to comment on the allegation.
