In December 2021, two Rohingya filed a class action against Meta in California, USA. They alleged that Facebook's failure to moderate hate speech led to violence and killings against the Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic group in Myanmar. They sought $150 billion in damages. In 2024, the case was dismissed and the plaintiffs appealed. In April 2026, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit dismissed the lawsuit, arguing that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act provides immunity for online platforms about third-party content posted by their users.
