Response from Target to allegations of child labour in its supply chain

“We were deeply troubled by the New York Times report on underage labor, and we’re conducting thorough investigations into these allegations with the Target supplier named in the report.

“As both a global employer and a purchaser of goods, Target believes that underage labor has no place in a retail supply chain. Our Standards of Vendor Engagement (SOVE), published on our website, publicly state Target’s zero tolerance policy for underage labor and outline consequences for suppliers who violate our standards. We also regularly provide training for suppliers and our team on how to prevent underage labor.

“We recognize that it is incumbent upon retailers and national brand partners to verify that social compliance expectations are being met, and we maintain robust auditing and remediation programs for that purpose. These programs are aligned with the guidance set forth by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the International Labor Organization Core Conventions.

“Following the recent allegations of misconduct against a supplier of national brand bread products sold at Target, we immediately launched an investigation. This independent investigation will review hiring practices for this vendor and for any third-party temporary agencies that may be involved in their manufacturing operation. While we’re not able to disclose specific findings of active investigations, we can confirm that anytime a facility is found to be in violation of our SOVE, we take swift action.

“Above all, Target is committed to the best interests of children across the globe, and that commitment has remained top of mind as we’ve moved quickly in responding to these concerns.”
