Uzbekistan: Waste-to-energy project invested by China CAMC Engineering draws concern over transparency and potential environmental and health problems; incl. co. non-response

An article released by Global Voices in October 2025 raises concerns about the lack of transparency and potential environmental and health risks linked to China CAMC Engineering's waste-to-energy (WTE) projects in Uzbekistan. According to the article, the deals between the Uzbek government and the Chinese company were made without public disclosure or open tenders, leaving unanswered questions about contract terms, pricing, and long-term state obligations. Additionally, experts warned that despite claims of sustainability, WTE plants can emit hazardous pollutants such as dioxins, furans, and microplastics, especially when plastics are burned, potentially leading to respiratory diseases, birth defects, and other long-term health issues.

The Business and Human Rights Resource Center reached out to China CAMC Engineering for comment. The company did not respond.
