Farai Maguwu, director of the Centre for Natural Resources Governance (CNRG), received intimidating remarks shortly after the CNRG launched a 35-page report exposing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ally Scott Sakupwanya’s alleged involvement in gold leakages and violence at Redwing Mine, Zimbabwe. Sakupwanya runs the Betterbrands Mining Company (part of the Better Brands Group), which has a tributary agreement to mine gold at Redwing Mine. The mine is owned and operated by King's Daughter Mining Company Limited (KDMC), part of Metallon Corporation. The threat, which was sent from the Twitter handle of a local politician on 14th July 2022, said that ‘[Maguwu] should be patriotic and happy to avoid early recall. Anger gnaws at your vitals and leads to early deaths.’ According to local press, Maguwu allegedly received death threats for exposing gold looting orchestrated by people affiliated to the ruling party.
