Human Rights Defender and Social Activist Killed in Chocó [Colombia]
Walberto Hoyos Rivas had narrowly survived one attempt on his life. Sadly, he did not survive the second. The courageous community leader of Curvaradó, an Afro-Colombian territory in the Chocó department, was assassinated yesterday by suspected paramilitaries...Hoyos was renowned for being a major whistleblower about dark alliances between paramilitaries and palm oil businesses, responsible for usurping lands from Afro-Colombians, resulting in massive forced displacements and the establishment of large palm plantations in Afro-Colombian collective territories. Hoyos' accusations had been echoed by the Attorney General's office...the Ombudsman...as well as the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR).
