Indonesia: Nickel miners linked to deforestation & displacement of villages; incl. company responses

A Financial Times report cites companies that are linked to “Indonesian nickel projects responsible for the clearance of large swaths of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests”. Further, the article alleges that the deforestation brought about by nickel mining projects in Indonesia is “coupled with waste, pollution, high carbon emissions and displacement of villages”.

The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre invited three companies (which have not been earlier invited to respond based on past media reports) named in the report to respond to the allegations in the report: Jardine Matheson, United Tractors, and Nickel Industries. Jardine Matheson and United Tractors responded (linked below); Nickel Industries did not.

Other companies cited in the report have been approached by the Resource Centre for responses (their responses or non-responses are linked for reference): Ford, Vale (also here), Tsingshan, Bintang Delapan, and Huayou Cobalt.
