On 13 December 2018, Jakeline Romero Epiayu, director of the Indigenous Peoples organization Force of Wayuu Women, received death threats via text messages against her and her family. Jakeline Romero has received threats since 2005, including threats to Jakeline’s sister, Jazmín Romero Epiayu in 2012 and her daughter Génesis Gutiérrez, who was 15 years old when Jakeline was threatened in 2014. Jakeline Romero is an indigenous human rights defender who is fighting against the negative environmental impacts of mining projects in her ancestral territory.
