Myanmar: H&M supply chain exit leads to job losses for 3,000 garment workers

Over 3,000 Myanmar garment workers, mostly women, face job losses as Chinese-owned manufacturer Teng Hui Myanmar closes its Yangon factories due to reduced orders from H&M. The Swedish brand's 2023 decision to exit military-ruled Myanmar's supply chain, amid global pressure over labour abuses, has exacerbated challenges for workers already struggling with political instability and labour shortages since the 2021 coup. While Teng Hui promises compensation, workers fear finding new employment. Critics argue that boycotts, like H&M's, worsen conditions for workers under junta rule, despite the International Labour Organization's sanctions against Myanmar for violations of worker rights.
