Myanmar: Push to revive Myitsone dam raises human rights & environmental concerns, incl. cos. non-responses

Environmental experts, human rights groups and local communities raise concerns over the resumption of controversial $3.6 billion Myitsone Dam project in Kachin state, where the project launched in 2009. The project is owned by Upstream Ayeyarwady Confluence Basin Hydropower Company, which is reportedly a joint venture between China’s Power Investment Corporation and Asia World Company.

Despite opposition to the construction of the project, efforts to revive it have intensified 15 years after it was suspended due to widespread public scrutiny. Backed by China, the massive hydropower project is being pushed by the regime to address electricity shortages.

In August, Business and Human Rights Centre invited Upstream Ayeyarwady Confluence Basin Hydropower Company, China’s Power Investment Corporation and Asia World Company to respond to the allegations. Upstream Ayeyarwady Confluence Basin Hydropower Company could not be contacted while the other two did not respond. If the companies wish to provide a response, the story page will be updated accordingly.
