Peru: Communities affected by Las Bambas mining optimistic about dialogue with top government officials
After the meeting on Monday 23 and the meeting scheduled for 25 May, the leaders of the Fuerabamba indigenous community, who have been protesting against the Chinese mining company Las Bambas (part of MMG, part of China Minmetals), said they feel "progress" in the process of resolving the demands they have been making for months. To press for an early solution, the company's workers had gone on hunger strike. It is hoped that the results will not only reopen operations but respond to human rights due diligence for the communities.
