On 16 October 2022, journalist Rafael Moreno was killed. He was involved in investigations into wide-scale corruption in the region of Córdoba, Colombia, related to public works contracts. He was also looking into the use of materials from the Uré River in public works without environmental licenses. He also accused several mining companies of operating without licenses. He had previously received threats and had openly declared that he knew he would one day be killed.
