Raymundo Robles Riaño, 55, Noé Robles Cruz, 38, and Gerardo Mendoza Reyes, 19, were killed in an attack during a party in the Barrio Chico of the Paso de la Reina community in Mexico. Since 2007, in the municipality of Santiago Jamiltepec, in the state of Oaxaca, the Paso de la Reyna community, made up of approximately 500 indigenous Chatin inhabitants, has been forced to organise itself to defend the Río Verde and its watershed. The establishment of a hydroelectric project and a multi-purpose dam a few metres from the community, authorised by the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), puts the rich biodiversity of one of the largest watersheds in Oaxaca, as well as local agriculture, at serious risk. The organization Educa Oaxaca pointed out that the community of Paso de la Reyna does not have any precautionary measures from state or federal authorities despite the fact that between March 14 and 15, Raymundo Robles Riaño, substitute of the municipal agent, Noé Robles Cruz, and Gerardo Mendoza Reyes were murdered in the Barrio Chico of Paso de la Reyna. The organization, which has accompanied the process of defense of the territory against hydroelectric megaprojects and extractivism, identified that Paso de la Reyna "suffers from cacique authoritarianism and impunity, which are the structural causes of the violent departure of five of its citizens this year".
