Pink Diamonds (formerly Williamson Diamonds Limited) response

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the International Peace Information Service (IPIS) Briefing: After the tailings dam collapse: Community perspectives on compensation and restoration at the Williamson diamond mine, Tanzania

Williamson Diamonds Limited (WDL) welcomes IPIS’s report and acknowledges the concerns raised in relation to the restoration and remediation efforts following the tailings dam failure at the Williamson Diamond Mine in Tanzania. Petra Diamonds sold shares in the mine on 14 May 2025. Pink Diamonds, the mine’s new owners, remains fully committed to implementing all resettlement and compensation activities in a manner that is lawful, fair, transparent, and aligned with international best practices. WDL suspended production following the dam break and in its restoration efforts, adhered to both the legislated valuation processes under Tanzanian law and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standard 5 on Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement.

Beyond mere compliance and despite the disastrous context, WDL, and experts deployed on the ground at the time, are profoundly proud of the immediate response efforts, particularly their speed, diligence, and humanity. A failure should never happen and there is no such thing as a good time, but the breach occurred at a particularly sensitive moment, where the relationship between the operation and affected communities would be tested. We believe that the swift, careful and comprehensive remediation efforts undertaken in the aftermath have contributed meaningfully to robust, trusting relationships. Nonetheless, we accept that community concerns might persist and welcome dialogue, hoping that we may resolve grievances collaboratively and effectively.
