S. Korea: Data breach at streaming platform Tving raises user trust concerns, CEO issues apology

Обвинения

"A major setback descends on loss-making Tving — will hacking shock derail its challenge to Netflix?", 4 June 2026

A personal data breach has occurred at online video streaming (OTT) service Tving. Trust in platform companies, which hold vast amounts of user data and preference information, appears to be shaken.

…Tving officially announced on 3 June that an unidentified hacker had unlawfully accessed its database and exfiltrated users' △IDs △names △dates of birth △gender △mobile phone numbers △email addresses △linking information (CI) △duplicate subscription verification information (DI) △account numbers △passwords and other data. However, the company has not disclosed the specific scale of the damage, heightening user anxiety. (…) Industry security experts estimate that the personal data of around five million users may have been compromised.

…The fact that Tving user accounts are linked to not only IDs registered on its own website and application but also to affiliated service IDs (…) is also cause for concern. Tving's strategy of expanding subscriber numbers and convenience has heightened the anxiety and inconvenience of those affected.

…Tving CEO Ju-hee Choi said: "Tiving has confirmed that users' personal information was leaked through unauthorised external access," adding, "We failed to protect the information entrusted to us by our users, and the responsibility lies entirely with Tiving."

She further pledged to "cooperate sincerely with investigations by the government and relevant authorities and to communicate progress and follow-up measures transparently," and to "review our security systems from scratch to ensure this never happens again. We will fulfil our responsibilities to the end in order to restore trust."
