On 15 July, Svetlana Kareva, an environmental activist was brutally beaten with batons by police near Likino-Dulevo town while protesting with local residents against construction of a waste recycling plant by company “Khartia”. She was hospitalized and later diagnosed with concussion. Local activists believe that under the guise of the plant a garbage landfill will be built in a swamp, which will destroy the environment. The company in charge of the construction is allegedly owned by Igor Chaika, the youngest son of the Russian Prosecutor General.
