Union labels Rand Uranium’s food ban as ‘inhumane’ [So. Africa]

Trade union United Association of South Africa...threatened to take legal action against Rand Uranium (joint venture Harmony Gold, Pamodzi Resource Funds)...over what it called the uranium-miner’s “inhumane” practice of preventing workers from taking food and water underground. The union noted that Rand Uranium was prohibiting workers from taking food and water underground in an effort to prevent illegal miners from getting access to sustenance. Mineral workers sector divisional manager Franz Stehring said...that the prohibition of food for underground workers is in direct violation of labour legislation, and the Constitution. “...This means that our members are forced to work long hours underground without eating or drinking,” Stehring stated. This, he noted, also impacted on the health of the employees.
