Australia: Government review of Modern Slavery Act

BHRRC

The Australian Government is conducting a statutory review of the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) (the Act). The review is considering the operation of the Act over its first three years and whether further measures to improve the Act and improve compliance are necessary.

Professor John McMillan, AO, is leading the review. It will be completed in March 2023 and a final report will then be tabled in Parliament.

The Government has also published the Issues Paper (linked below) that calls for the public's submissions on the issues to be considered in the review. Further, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre has made a written submission (linked below) to the Review which recommends strengthening the Act with due diligence requirements and penalties.
