Court victory for biodiversity and human rights may be overturned [Colombia]

查看所有标签
A key [Colombia] court ruling that stopped a mining project threatening biodiverse forests and human rights is under attack. Back in 2004, the Colombian government granted the Muriel Mining Corporation a concession for large-scale copper and gold mining in the Chocó region...If built, the open-pit Mandé Norte project would have stripped forests, destroyed key habitat, and potentially polluted miles of rivers used by local communities...Colombia's Constitutional Court ruled in 2009 to halt the Mandé Norte mining project. The decision marked the first time a Latin American national court recognized the need for environmental impact assessments prior to community consultations...Now this victory is in jeopardy. Muriel Mining and Colombia's Ministry of Interior and Justice have requested that the court decision be annulled.
