On 28 January 2023, Luis Alonzo Teruel, journalist covering illegal logging and deforestation in the department of Santa Bárbara, Honduras, was shot by two unidentified individuals who intercepted him when he was travelling with his 11 year old son. Teruel hosted a political program on the local channel Pecaligüe TV and was part of a family of environmental defenders.
