Meiji response to alleged violation of Tokyo Olympics palm oil procurement code

[Japanese-to-English translation: Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

[...]

In accordance with the "Sustainable Sourcing Code" and "Sourcing Code for the Promotion of Sustainable Palm Oil" of the Tokyo 2020 Committee, we launched "Chocolate Snack", an official licensed product in Tokyo 2020, after confirming with the organizational committee.

After receiving the notification regarding this report, we re-examined our suppliers for the country of origin of palm oil used as a raw material for this product. As a result, we received an answer that it was difficult to physically trace the final plantation of palm oil entering Japan, and we responded it to the organizing committee.

We recognize that sustainable procurement with consideration for human rights and the environment is an important social issue. With regard to palm oil, we are actively switching to RSPO certified palm oil (mass balance method). In fiscal year of 2020, approximately 68% of the palm oil used as a raw material was certified palm oil. In addition to achieving a 100% conversion to certified palm oil by the end of the fiscal year of 2023, we are also working to strengthen traceability.
