"It is said that workers' rights are being violated in the workplace until they are fired if they miss 1 day of work", 13 August 2022

Factory workers say that there are violations of workers' rights such as being fired if they miss 1 day of work...being treated rudely in the workplace, and [forced to] work overtime on Sundays.

… SANYUAN OVERSEA (MYANMAR) APPAREL factory, which was opened on Minsiddhi Kyawm Road, East Dagon Industrial Zone, Yangon Region, is operating with more than 800 people and is manufacturing [for] the Mango brand. In addition, there is no union in the workplace.

The workers say that they are forced to start work at 8:00 a.m., but the supervisors start at 7:50 a.m. and force them to sew clothes.

There are also more requests than before [to complete targets] that...worker[s] cannot meet, and if the standards are not met, the workers are told to quit their jobs.

"When a sick worker arrives at the workplace and asks for a gate pass, the super[visor] says that nothing will happen, and the worker is forced to continue sewing…Even if there is an important matter, it is a very difficult situation to get a gate pass," said a worker at the factory.

In addition, they said that workers...were forced to work overtime until 10:00 p.m. every day, and [workers who did not...were insulted and discriminated against.

"Even on Sundays, we have to work overtime without being given a day off. At night, we are called [for] overtime. The workers do not want to work overtime because it is not safe at night, and they are helpless," said a worker...

In addition, workers at the factory say that if they miss 1 day of work after taking leave, they are fired from their jobs, and they are unable to tell their employers about the current difficulties and situations.
