Nepal: Hydropower workers, including a Chinese worker, rescued after flood, hundreds still missing

A rescue operation is underway in Nepal to locate an estimated 900 workers who remain unaccounted for after a flood struck a string of hydropower stations. Two workers were rescued from a mud-choked tunnel, including mechanical foreman Sanjay Sah, who had been trapped for nine days. A Chinese worker was also rescued from another hydropower station. The rescue effort, led by Nepali authorities and international tunneling expert Arnold Dix, faces significant challenges due to the force of the flood, which obliterated 11 hydropower stations and buried them beneath meters of mud. Roads leading to the stations have been washed away, and the kind of equipment needed to dig through boulders and thick mud is too heavy to be lifted by helicopters. Desperate relatives of missing workers have pressured the government to do more.
