Response from Football Australia to questions on human rights risks and due diligence ahead of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

We can confirm that Football Australia has held meetings with - or received briefings from - officials from FIFA, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, the Australian Government, Amnesty International, and the International Labour Organisation, to gather information as to the situation regarding the preservation of human rights in connection with the hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This process of education and dialogue has been ongoing over the past 18 months and has increased since our recent qualification (June 2022) for the tournament proper.

As part of Football Australia’s due diligence process and in accordance with guidance received from the International Labour Organisation, Football Australia is requesting information/evidence of compliance with local labour laws from organisations proposed to provide services directly to Australia’s delegation during its participation in the tournament. Football Australia expects to receive these assurances over the coming weeks and, if required, will adjust its procurement of services accordingly. During the tournament, Australia’s delegation will report any concerns regarding compliance with local labour laws to the Qatar authorities. We are advised that these measures will promote Australia’s participation at this year’s FIFA World Cup in a socially responsible way.
