Thailand: Govt. pauses 166 data centre projects to set national standards as community concerns grow
Thailand’s data‑centre policy board has halted 166 projects, including 49 under construction and 117 pending approval, while drafting nationwide standards for resource use, safety and economic benefits. Four sub‑committees will set criteria within a month, aiming to ensure that new facilities create jobs, income and technology gains for Thai workers and SMEs rather than merely providing server space. The board will assess each site’s water and electricity needs, proximity to communities and environmental impact, and will introduce a central dashboard to track cumulative effects. Existing operators receive a transition period to meet minimum standards covering planning, safety, backup fuel and environmental protection. The move seeks to protect residents’ right to a safe environment and to secure affordable cloud and AI services for the population.
