US firms seek stop to labor attacks [Philippines]
At least eight US apparel and retail companies have sent a letter to President Macapagal-Arroyo, expressing their concern over the recent violent attacks on strikers in a Korean-owned company at the Cavite Export Processing Zone (CEPZ). The letter—dated Aug. 3 and signed by the executives of Walmart, American Eagle Outfitters, GAP, Jones Apparel Group, Liz Claiborne, Philips-Van Heusen, VF Corp., and Polo—followed the alleged violent attacks of the police and security guards against the striking workers of Chong Won Fashion Inc. (now C. Woo Trading)... [O]n November 7, 2006,...the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce [demanded that] Ms Arroyo...stop political killings.
