USA: Migrant janitors in Minnesota protest alleged age discrimination & dismissal by outsourced contractor, Kleen-Tech; incl. non-response from co.'s private equity investor

In September 2025, it was reported that migrant janitors in Minnesota have protested their dismissal after Hennepin County Government Centre changed to a new janitorial services contractor, Kleen-Tech.

The protests were organised by the union SEIU Local 26; Kleen-Tech is a member of Minneapolis-St. Paul Contract Cleaners Association, which has a bargaining agreement with the union.

The workers said that their dismissal will increase the workload of remaining staff; and affected workers allege age discrimination has been a factor in their dismissal. Kleen-Tech did not respond to journalist’s request for comment.

Kleen-Tech was acquired by private equity firm, Rainier Partners, in September, according to reporting by Sahan Journal. In October, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Rainier Partners to respond to the reporting of alleged age discrimination impacting migrant janitors at Kleen-Tech; and disclose any human rights due diligence it undertakes prior to investing in companies and when monitoring working conditions at investee firms. The company did not respond.
