"The signatory organizations condemn the death threats against Juan David Amaya, activist and human rights defender in Colombia" 14 January 2026

The undersigned organizations and collectives, dedicated to the promotion and defense of human rights, environmental justice, and freedom of expression, express our deepest concern and strong condemnation regarding the death threats made against the 19-year-old Colombian human rights activist and defender Juan David Amaya, which occurred near his residence during the morning hours of January 12, 2026.

This direct act of intimidation endangers his life and safety, as well as that of his closest circle. These types of attacks not only violate fundamental rights — including the right to life, liberty, and physical integrity — but also undermine the democratic fabric and the possibility of effective citizen participation.

We urgently and categorically demand that national and international authorities:

Immediately open an investigation aimed at identifying, prosecuting, and sanctioning both the material and intellectual perpetrators of these threats, allowing no space for impunity...

Adopt comprehensive and effective protection measures that immediately safeguard the life, integrity of Juan David Amaya and his close circle...

Guarantee unrestricted rights to defense and citizen participation...

Publicly and unequivocally reject, across all sectors, any action seeking to curtail, intimidate, or silence the legitimate and peaceful work of activists and defenders...

This incident is a clear symptom of the ongoing crisis regarding democratic guarantees and respect for fundamental rights. Violence against defenders ultimately constitutes violence against society as a whole...

We urgently call upon the national and international community to unite in defense of those who risk their lives to promote a more just future respectful of human dignity...
