Japan: IOM and JP-MIRAI sign MoU to promote protection of migrant workers' rights including fair and ethical recruitment

"JP-MIRAI and IOM Join Forces to Protect the Rights of Migrant Workers and Promote a Diverse and Inclusive Society," 18 August 2025

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Japan Platform for Migrant Workers towards Responsible and Inclusive Society (JP-MIRAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Tokyo, affirming their commitment to strengthen collaboration in protecting the rights of migrant workers and foster a diverse and inclusive society. 

The collaboration aims to promote a diverse and inclusive society that benefits migrant workers, their countries of origin, and host communities in Japan. Areas of cooperation include the empowerment of foreign workers, the promotion of fair and ethical recruitment, mutual learning and civic engagement among diverse stakeholders, and joint research and studies. 

At the signing ceremony, IOM Japan Chief of Mission, Ritsu Nacken, highlighted the growing contribution of migrant workers to Japanese society and stressed the importance of multi-stakeholder cooperation.

Kimitoshi Yabuki, Chairman of Board of JP-MIRAI, noted that cooperation with IOM allows Japan to draw on international experience and reassess its approach to welcoming migrant workers with a broader perspective.

Building on this MoU, JP-MIRAI and IOM will strengthen their collaborative efforts to promote fair recruitments, protect the migrant workers’ rights and foster an inclusive society in Japan.
