On 28 April 2020, anti-mining LGBT+ and community human rights defender Sunthorn Duangnarong was summoned and arrested by the police after joining a demonstration against ongoing mining activities during the lockdown in Chaiyaphum Province, Thailand. She was summoned after joining the Network of People Who Own Mineral Resource, a nationwide network which monitors impacts of mining projects on communities, and reading out a statement demanding the government and private sector to put on hold any mining activities during the period when restrictions are imposed to combat spread of Covid-19. Environmental problems are allegedly exacerbated as Chinese companies have made an active push to explore land for Potash mining, especially in the Northeast, including China Ming Ta Potash corporation.
