In August it was reported that cleaning and maintenance workers at the Radisson Blu hotel in Canary Wharf, London, would strike due to poor working conditions.
The workers’ union, United Voices of the World, said conditions deteriorated after the hotel’s cleaning contract was given to outsourced firm WGC, including reduced hours and increased production targets. The workers are also paid below the London Living Wage.
Most of the workers are migrant women from Nepal.
Reporting also says that the strikers will be joined by staff from a London bar, Draughts Bar, who are also protesting poor working conditions.
Journalists contacted WGC, Radisson Blu and Draughts Bar for comment.
At the end of August, it was reported that the strike had been cancelled after the workers reached an agreement that “met all their demands”. WGC has agreed to increase pay to the London Living wage, reduce workloads, and reinstate the original working hours.
The whole team stood together and achieved this win. We are both excited and grateful — excited for the future and grateful because we are with UVW, and WGC are finally listening to us.Cleaning and maintenance worker at Radisson Blu
