Honor the Earth Executive Director and Indigenous leader Winona LaDuke and six other women were arrested on July 19, 2021, during a protest in front of the pending Enbridge Line 3 replacement near the Shell River in Wadena County, USA. The other six arrested water defenders were Barbara Lee With, Mary Katherine Klein, Patricia Jean Weber, Kelly Reta Maracle, Cheryl Lynn Barnds, and Kristen Lynne Razowsky. In July 2021, another five activists were arrested and charged, namely Seth Levin Noscanchuk, Nathan Walker Joseph, Jackson Sven Froiland, Monserrat Sylvie Gerardo, and Andrea Sprague Boit. The multi-billion dollar replacement pipeline carves a path in between three reservations in central and northern Minnesota. Environmental and tribal groups say the line would worsen climate change and risk spills in areas where Native Americans harvest wild rice, hunt, fish, gather medicinal plants, and claim treaty rights. LaDuke also alleged corruption in the state Department of Natural Resources, saying it had been “wooed by Enbridge.” In a statement, Enbridge said: “As a company, we recognize the rights of individuals and groups to express their views legally and peacefully, but we will not tolerate illegal acts.”
