Grassroots Defender Chief Ajele Sunday is the National President of the Community Forest Watch and spokesperson of Okomu Clan in Nigeria. He leads the advocacy against the Okomu Oil Palm company. Holding company Socfin Group is the majority shareholder, with 64.97% shares. Okomu is accused of several human rights abuses such as land grabs, forced evictions, and other attacks on local communities. Because of his work, Sunday has been facing threats to his life and freedom. In 2021, he was detained twice on allegation that he planted a bomb at the Company’s facilities, and for his alleged involvement in the murdering of four persons in the plantation. He was released unconditionally on each occasions.
