Colombia: AngloGold Ashanti responds to UN rapporteur on threats received by Robinson Mejía for overseeing the company's operations; it consider that the defender disseminated "potentially harmful information" that affects the company's capital

"Response from AngloGold Ashanti Colombia" - January 12, 2022

...Respect for human rights and human rights defenders represents the foundation of AngloGold Ashanti's values, as well as our standards in the way we do business. We have zero tolerance for any form of threats and intimidation, and we encourage and facilitate constructive dialogue with stakeholders, regardless of their support or otherwise for our projects. On the other hand, we have a long and sustained history of engaging in constructive debates about mining around the world with groups from all sides... Before answering your specific questions, we want to emphasize that we have not engaged, and will not engage, in any action that intimidates those who disagree with our projects, nor have we engaged in any form of repression in the debate. In that sense, we remain always open to a good faith dialogue with Mr. Robinson Mejia and any other stakeholder in Colombia, or anywhere else, where our operations have a presence... AngloGold Ashanti condemns attacks against those who safeguard human and community rights and will continue to act in this regard. We have always promoted dialogue with both supporters and opponents of mining, and reject in the strongest possible terms any threat or intimidation against any community or individual... Once AngloGold Ashanti became aware of Mejia's Twitter post, and in order to balance the spread of false and potentially damaging information as quickly as possible, AngloGold Ashanti proceeded to issue a statement on its own official Twitter account, informing the community of the falsity of the post... AngloGold Ashanti once again requested Mr. Mejía, via Twitter, to proceed with the rectification, with a copy of this request to the Attorney General's Office, given the negative implications of the continued dissemination of false information. However, Mr. Mejía has maintained his position and declined the rectification that is at the point... Accordingly, AngloGold Ashanti Colombia will seek to use reasonable means to recognize and flag false information, in order to protect its own reputation and identify false communications that may have detrimental repercussions for the company, communities and other stakeholders. We chose to do this before communicating with the authorities, such as the matter in question, with a view to addressing the problem in a timely manner... On the particular matter, it should be noted that we have not resorted to legal action to date, as we prefer dialogue for the resolution of conflict or potential conflict situations... However, we reserve our rights in this matter....
