In February 2020, representatives of Kronospan filed a defamation lawsuit against the NGO Ecoclub after disseminated information about potential negative environmental impacts, particularly air pollution, of a planned wood processing facility near Rivne, Ukraine. The company demanded compensation of 150 000 UAH (approximately 5000 euro) due to the injury caused to their business reputation, as they claimed these were false statements. The lawsuit was granted by the court and left unchanged by an appeal court. According to the court’s decision, Ecoclub had to withdraw several statements from two publications and social networks and pay a court fee of UAH 4,204. In February 2021, Ecoclub filed an appeal to the Economic Court of Cassation of the Supreme Court requesting to open cassation proceedings and suspend the execution of the appealed decision until the end of its review in cassation and to cancel the decision of the North-Western Economic Appeal Court from January 20, 2021 and to transfer the case for a new trial by an appeal court. Ecoclub has stated the granting of the lawsuit violated the rights of Ecoclub to freely disseminate information and its own comments on the environment impact assessment report for the planned project. On 26 May 2021, the Supreme Court granted decision in favor of Ecoclub.
