Fraud, heat, and illegal working hours: Souane's death in Pujaire (Almería) points to the agricultural model.
…The Farm Workers' Union–Andalusian Workers' Union (SOC/SAT) of Almería has publicly denounced the death of Souane, a farm worker who died in mid-August from heat stroke while working between 3 and 4 p.m. on a farm in Pujaire, in Cabo de Gata (Almería).
According to testimonies collected by the organization, the death occurred during hours prohibited by the farm labor agreement and in extreme conditions that flagrantly violated occupational risk prevention regulations. The union emphasizes that this is "yet another victim of employer terrorism in the fields of Almería."
Souane had been working in the so-called sea of plastic in Almería for over twenty years. His salary supported his partner and five children in Senegal, who depended financially on his work. The SOC/SAT (Spanish Social Security Administration) confirmed that on the Friday following his death, he accompanied the family to the Almería courts and that he will use all his legal and human resources to assist the family members to ensure that this death does not go unpunished.
The organization poses a direct question: "Why was Souane working at those hours in those temperatures?" The answer, the union warns, lies in the common practice of employers who fail to respect either the summer workday established by the collective agreement or basic safety obligations…
