On 25 November 2023, Geoffrey Kato, one of the sons of Joseph Kaliisa , a community land rights defender from Kiryandongo district, Uganda, was shot and killed by security guards from the private security company, Magnum Limited, employed by Somdiam Limited.

Kaliisa has been actively engaged in mobilizing his community in resistance against Somdiam's allegedly illegal land eviction in the villages of Nyamuntende, Ndoi, and Kikungulu.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre contacted Magnum Limited and Somdiam Limited to respond, they did not.
