At least 20 indigenous people of the Enawenê-Nawê ethnic group were injured during an alleged attack by security guards of the Hydria Geração de Energia company, which controls Small Hydroelectric Plants (SHPs) installed on the Juruena River, in the region of Sapezal, Rondon, Parecis, Telegráfica and Campos de Júlio, in western Mato Grosso. The community said it was demonstrating to try to reach an agreement with the company that is using part of the region for the project. A representative of the ethnic group says that more than 400 people, including women and children, were participating in the protest. The aim was to get a meeting with the owner of the company. However, according to him, the population was hit by rubber bullets and had two cars burned and five other vehicles, which were transporting food, seized. According to the group, the company has built eight SHPs on the Juruena River, used by the community to maintain crops, and in exchange they pay the indigenous people a fee for the use of the area. For the community, this amount is insufficient to meet the needs of the affected population and maintain the preservation of the area.
