Japan: LDP signals intention to prohibit imports principally from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region

”日本版ウイグル強制労働防止法検討 自民古屋氏、超党派議連で世界ウイグル会議総裁と面会,” 12 November 2025

Keiji Furuya, Chairperson of the LDP’s Election Strategy Committee, expressed his intention to submit a Japanese version of a bill, modeled on the U.S. Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which in principle bans imports of goods from China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, as a member-initiated legislation to the Diet. He plans to set up a project team (PT) under the cross-party “Japan Uyghur Parliamentary Association", which he chairs, to draft the bill, he said at the parliamentary group’s general meeting.

Appeal for verification of the survival of Uyghur Japanese

The U.S. law was enacted in June 2022 under the Biden administration, which criticised China’s repression of Uyghurs as “genocide.” Similar measures are gradually spreading in Europe, including bans on the distribution and import of products made with forced labour.

At the general meeting, Turgunjan Alawdun, president of the exiled Uyghur organization, the World Uyghur Congress, who had come to Japan, submitted a petition to the parliamentary group. Its main requests included:

  1. Verification of the survival of Uyghur relatives naturalised in Japan and scholars who studied in Japan,
  2. Ban on imports of products linked to Uyghur forced labour, and
  3. Protection of Uyghur refugees overseas.

Furuya also indicated that he intends to convey these requests to the government.
