On 18 April 2021, the home of lawyer Laken Lepatu Aigilo was allegedly entered by police officers who assaulted, kidnapped and threatened to kill him before detaining him at a police station. Aigilo said there had been no prior complaint against him and no warrant issued. Aigilo was released the next day. The incident occurred the day after Aigilo lodged a complaint with the PNG Ombudsman Commission against Enga Governor Ipatas regarding allegations about financial mismanagement of the Porgera mine landowners’ royalty payments. The Porgera mine is a joint venture between Barrick Gold & Mineral Resources Enga.
