Mexico: Negative social and environmental impacts of solar farm of Engie, according to locals & academics

指控

In spite of complying with the regulations of the Mexican government and institutions, the installation of the Nueva Xcala Solar Park on ejido common lands -used for agriculture, cattle raising and the production of the maguey pulquero- generates a series of socio-environmental impacts, among which the following stand out:

  1. The solar farm occupies historical territories and puts at risk the archaeological heritage of the pre-Hispanic settlements of Teotihuacan and Mexica / Acolhuas.
  2. By displacing native flora and fauna, eradicating maguey plantations, and cutting down the oak forest in Monte de Malpaís, it affects the environmental services provided by this agroecological system, including: microclimate regulation, water filtration, oxygen production, and soil erosion control.
  3. Deforestation constitutes a threat against local biodiversity, for which scientific studies and protection measures are urgently needed.
