Qatar 2022: Ten European FAs address FIFA in letter over request to not get involved with politics, says FIFA needs to take stronger action

Ten European soccer associations have demanded Fifa takes stronger action to ensure improved rights for migrant workers in Qatar.

Criticism of the World Cup hosts has mounted recently. Seeking to quell the issue, Fifa president Gianni Infantino recently wrote to all Qatar 2022 teams asking for them to not get mired in political topics. The letter, which asked teams to insetad focus on soccer, drew strong criticism from organisations such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and LGBTQ+ campaigners...

The statement, which is co-signed by eight associations set to take part in the upcoming World Cup – including those from England, Germany and the Netherlands – reads: ‘We acknowledge, and welcome, as we have done in the past, that significant progress has been made by Qatar, particularly with regards to the rights of migrant workers, with the impact of legislative changes demonstrated in the International Labour Organisation’s recent reports...
