Rogelio Cac is Maya Q'eqchi and is a community authority, part of the Environment Commission of the Pansamalá community in Alta Verapaz, in opposition to the Renace 4 hydroelectric plant. He was arrested by agents on July 30, 2018 in the afternoon in Cobán Alta Verapaz. On Monday, July 30, 2018, he went to the Police ratify a complaint about a land problem, because the Pansamalá community denounced the Renace hydroelectric company for land dispossesion. When he was leaving the office some agents were waiting for him, they arrested him and then they transferred him to their offices. Don Rogelio, was criminally denounced by one of the workers of the Renace company, who accused him of making illegal detentions on May 15, 2017 in Pansamalá. On that occasion the community reached an agreement with the workers of the company after a mediation process before the Human Rights Ombudsman and the Madre Selva Collective. However, the company used that statement to initiate with a criminal complaint, which led to the arrest warrant against Mr. Rogelio Cac and his arrest a year later. The Renace complex has gained a strong social opposition in Alta Verapaz, the Q'eqchi people oppose these hydroelectric plants on the Cahabón river and Oxec, as a result of this, there are several community members with orders of apprehension and Bernardo Caal is in preventive detention.
