UK: Philippine communities file claim against Shell over damages caused by 2021 typhoon
In October 2025, a group of 67 survivors of Typhoon Rai (locally known as Super Typhoon Odette), which struck the Philippines in December 2021, sent a pre action letter to Shell, seeking compensation for deaths, injuries and damage caused by the storm, which they link to the company’s greenhouse-gas emissions and contribution to climate change.
In December 2025, a group of now 103 filed their claim at the Royal Courts of Justice. The case has been filed before UK courts, where Shell is domiciled, but it is based in Philippine law.
