On 26 May 2025, Ebo Mili, a prominent human rights lawyer and anti-dam activist from Arunachal Pradesh, disappeared after a police complaint was filed against him by the Siang Deputy Commissioner for allegedly violating prohibitory orders during peaceful protests against the proposed 11,000 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), a mega-dam backed by state-owned NHPC Limited. Mili, serving as legal advisor to the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum, had been supporting indigenous Adi communities resisting the project due to concerns over displacement, environmental destruction, and lack of consent. His disappearance sparked alarm among civil society, who view it as targeted repression linked to his opposition to business interests driving the SUMP.
