Alberto Xicoténcatl Carrasco is the director of the migrant shelter Casa del Migrante Saltillo, in Saltillo, Coahuila. On 28th December 2019 the company that provides water to the shelter, Aguas de Saltillo (part of Aguas de Barcelona) cut off the water supply, putting over 70 migrants, the majority from Central America, at risk. Following this, Alberto Xicoténcatl Carrasco publicly denounced the violation and was a victim of a defamatory campaign against him and others who collaborate with the refuge. He and others have been victim of threats and other attacks for their work defending migrants, leading to Alberto Xicoténcatl Carrasco being awarded protective measures by the National Protection Mechanism.
